nbc news decision 08

The 2008 Presidential election coverage was going to be the most important and competitive in regards to coverage. To differentiate NBC News and MSNBC from other competitors, I initiated and conceptualized the use of new technology for real-time graphics and virtual sets.

The overall design packaging needed to imply the size and scope of the election campaign and the impact of the voting across the U.S.  The graphic displays were conceived to allow the on-air talent to talk directly to the audience while explaining the analysis being presented, which is something many of our competition was not capable of delivering.

More importantly, as the team leader for this project, we developed this production methodology in-house  which contributed to significant cost savings for the company and enabled the graphic team to develop new creative applications and solutions.

We decided to use one of my infographic designs and rework it for the television coverage.  All of the studio cameras were outfitted with tracking systems that allowed for graphics to be displayed virtually and the on-air correspondents would react to them.

The studios at CNN New York were outfitted with an augmented reality system that would allow graphic displays to be incorporated into the live programming.
